Sharing is caring!

We have all been there; you walk in the room and can smell something terrible. Pinpointing the smell has led you to your carpet. There isn’t a visible stain, but you can still smell something pungent. Sometimes, even after successfully removing a stain from your carpet, odors linger long after. AmeriBest Carpet Cleaning is here to share some tips to help you get horrible odors out of your carpet successfully.

House Smells Musty? Air Out the Space!

The first and easiest thing you can try when removing odor from carpet, is to air the space out. Fresh air does wonders for removing odorous air. You might be surprised at how much this works. Allow fresh air to flow through the space for at least a few hours before revisiting to test for odors.

Vacuum Carpet Effectively

Vacuuming can help eliminate odors in your carpet. There may be traces of whatever is causing the odor that can be picked up in your vacuum. Make sure when you are vacuuming that you are going over the carpet in all directions to give the space a thorough vacuum job. If you have pets, be sure you are using the attachments that help to remove excess pet hair and dander from your carpet. This will go a long way in removing any odor.

Bust Out the Baking Soda to Remove Carpet Odors

This odor miracle worker is a common ingredient found in most kitchens. Removing odor from your carpet is nothing that a little baking soda can’t handle. Generously sprinkle the area with baking soda and let that stand for a long time. Not just hours, but let it stand for days. It won’t hurt anything to leave the baking soda on your carpet for 2-3 days to really work on that odor. Using a soft bristled broom to lightly work the baking soda deep into the carpet can be a helpful tool to ensure the entire problem area is covered.

Hydrogen Peroxide to Neutralize Carpet Odors

If you haven’t been able to successfully remove the odor after all of these steps, you can also try hydrogen peroxide on the odor. You need to be very careful when using hydrogen peroxide since it can cause discoloring in some carpeting. Always perform a spot test in a hidden area before working with it on your carpet. Gently work the hydrogen peroxide into the carpet and then soak up any excess with a clean rag after allowing it to sit for 10-15 minutes.
