Carpet Spot & Stain Removal Guide

Before attending to any stain, it is important to remember the basics. First, blot stains and avoid scrubbing and rubbing, work the outer perimeter of the stains and work in towards the center. 

Only use white cloths, towels, or paper towels as to not transfer dyes and prints on carpet and immediately tend to stains as soon as they happen for more efficient removal. When using any cleaners or household remedies to remove stains, test the solution in an inconspicuous area in the off chance it will compromise the color or durability of the fibers.

These stains require a simple formula comprised of ¼ tsp non-bleach detergent or white vinegar mixed well in 32 ounces of water. Examples of water-soluble stains include: alcoholic beverages, berries, colas, excrement, food, dyes, gravy, ice cream, jelly, milk, mud, washable ink and wet or latex paint.
 
Special Water-Soluble Stains – A more complex stain requires a little more power. Start by combining 1 tbsp ammonia and 1 cup water (if your carpet is wool or wool blends use a mild detergent in place of water). Special water-soluble stain examples are: blood, chocolate, coffee, mustard, tea, vomit, and wine.

Glue, Sticker Residue & Adhesive Carpet Stain Removal – Apply rubbing alcohol onto a cotton ball or cloth and sponge it on the glue or adhesive, gently working the alcohol into the stains. Wipe away the residue and repeat until the glue is removed.

Removing Gum & Sticky Candy from Carpet – Apply one or multiple ice cubes on the gum and candy until it is frozen. With a spoon, or another blunt object, shatter the stain. Pick up any big pieces and vacuum the rest.

Absorb excess liquid with a paper towel or dry rag and blot the remaining stain with a damp cloth. With one part water and one part white vinegar mixed in a spray bottle, apply the solution to the stain and allow it to set as you mix ½ tsp with a clear, mild, non-bleach detergent with 32 ounces of water and sponge that solution on. 

Blot the stain with moderate pressure and be sure to dry the area well after the stain is removed.

Fats, Oil, Wax - Best removed from carpet with paper towels and an iron. Set the iron on warm and place a paper towel over the top of the stain, followed by the iron. The fat, oil or wax will absorb into the paper towel and come right off your carpet.
 
Removing Nail Polish from Carpet – Apply a generous amount of nail polish removal on a rag and work the nail polish out.

Treating Cigarette Burns on Carpet – If the burn is mild, you can scrape the pile with a dull knife by gently rubbing off the blemish.
